Harm reduction strategies for addiction are considered as positive and courageous steps which the international community shelter to it to reduce the transmission of AIDS within the drug addicts' category.
These strategies proved their efficiency in reducing the number of HIV infection within the drug addicts in addition of counseling centers for them which comport on main fundamental concepts as following:
Avoiding increasing percentage of infections risks that may be transmitted by sharing needles among drug addicts and not only avoiding the practice, stressing on realization of imminent aims as reducing transmission of AIDS and the far-reaching aims as reducing of the drug addiction in addition to stressing on applying the chart of human rights completely without discriminating towards the drug addicts.
Utilization of many strategies to reach the harm reduction aims and working on many levels in a successive way to ensure the goal incipiency by schools and colleges and even the political key people and decision makers.
The participation of drug addicts themselves is very important on planning and on applying the prevention programs targeting them. |

Amidst political uncertainty and still continuing state of emergency in the city of Bangkok, the 20th International Harm Reduction Conference of 2009 started on Monday on a positive note. Over 900 colleagues and practitioners from over 80 countries, working to fight with HIV, stigma and promoting harm reduction, have gathered in Thailand to exchange knowledge and ideas on the complex issue. The role of police and law enforcement in drug control and harm reduction cannot be questioned. The deep-rooted links of drug use with crime, corruption and trafficking make it an extremely complicated issue to deal with. Over the years, the law enforcement agencies have mainly focused on reducing the supply side and have been unable to address the harm reduction component. The public health aspects of drug control, which should be in the forefront, have been pushed back. However, police and law enforcement agencies cannot be blamed only. KH-SIDC – Fifth Regional Training Workshop: “Harm Reduction Policy” |

The SIDC Sub-Regional Knowledge Hub (KH-SIDC) in Lebanon, with the support of the WHO and IHRA, and funded by Drosos Foundation, organized its fifth regional training workshop, this time addressing the topic of “Harm Reduction Policy”. The workshop was held at Le Crillon Hotel in Broummana, Lebanon, from Monday the 16th to Thursday the 19th of March, 2009. Participants attending the workshop included 26 health professionals, medical doctors, police, NGO managers and ex-drug users from Lebanon, Syria, Palestine, Jordan, Sultanate of Oman, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Iraq. |

 The International Harm Reduction Association (IHRA) held its 20th annual International Conference on Harm Reduction in Bangkok, Thailand from April 20-23, 2009. The conference brought together harm reduction activists from all over the world to share experiences and discussions on the latest innovations in the field. We met up with Professor Gerry Stimson, Executive Director of IHRA, following the closing of a successful conference and discussed the event as a whole, including the representation from the MENA region. |

This is the last day of the Conference, after having a number of interesting sessions that varied from scientific ones, to advocacy, Gender roles, International Drug policies, Nurses role in Harm Reduction, in addition to the Pharmaceutical session that tackled the advantages and the inconvenience of the methamphetamine, IHRA closed the conference were all participants and people who prepared and participated actively to it were acknowledged and thanked. |
