Welcome to MENAHRA
MENAHRA aims to develop harm reduction in the Middle East and North Africa. MENAHRA comprises three sub-regional knowledge hubs responsible for capacity building,training,advocacy and documentation, and a Network linking people working in this field.
 

Soins Infirmiers et Developpement Communautaire (SIDC) in Beirut hosts the sub-regional hub for Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Yemen and the Gulf States. The Iranian National Center on Addictions (INCAS) hosts the sub-regional hub for Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq. ArRazi Hospital in Rabat hosts the sub-regional knowledge hub for Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia and possibly Libya.
 
The project is supported by the World Health Organization and International Harm Reduction Association with financial support from the Drosos Foundation.

IHRA’s 20th Conference on Harm Reduction – Bangkok- Day 3 Print E-mail

The third day of IHRA’s conference on harm reduction was full of sessions and workshops that were successful, MENAHRA team attended actively in a number of sessions that topics will be serving during the implementation of HR in the MENA region.

The topics approached in this day were the following:
• Young people using drugs and harm reduction (Rights and health approaches)
• Legal interventions to improve rights
• Evidence in Harm Reduction
• The Good, the Bad and the Ugly: Employing Drug Users in Harm Reduction
• The decriminalization in Harm Reduction
• Risk environment and Drug Harms
• Human Rights and drug law Reform
• Needle and Syringe exchange program
• Qualitative studies and Harm Reduction studies
• Drug User organizing in Asia
• Risk Behaviors among Injecting Drug Users
• Harm Reduction services for women
• Illicit Drug Use, intensive sex partying and risk
• Psychosocial services for HIV prevention and Harm Reduction
• Children and families affected by drug use
• Human rights violations in the war on drugs
• Tobacco use and Harm Reduction

In addition to poster presentations and film festival on the topic of the Conference from Canada, Australia, Finland, USA, new Zealand, Thailand, Mexico, Afghanistan  and other countries.

One of Harm Reduction comparative studies from the MENA region was presented by Dr Saman Zamani during the conference for the session of Needle and Syringe exchange program.

Dr Zamani conducted his study in Tehran on Needle and syringe sharing practices among injecting drug users through comparing two neighborhoods; one with and one without a needle and syringe programme, which showed that sharing N&S in the intervention site was less than the non intervention site in approximately 40 %.

Finally, MENAHRA would like to congratulate the leading individuals and organizations and Dr Zamani who was among them that were awarded by IHRA for their achievements in the field of Harm Reduction.
Awards were distributed during a party that IHRA organized for all the participants of the Conference, the party took place at the pool terrasse of the Imperial Park Hotel in the evening that closured the third day cheerfully.
