Menahra – Middle East Harm Reduction Association


The Middle East and North Africa Harm Reduction Association (MENAHRA,) in collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), conducted training on Harm Reduction for Libyan Delegates at the Lancaster Hotel in Beirut, Lebanon, from 25 to 29 July, and from 1 to 3 August, 2016.

 The training was facilitated by Soins Infirmiers et Developpement Communautaire (SIDC), with the participation of specialists and experienced professionals in the field of harm reduction under the supervision of the SIDC Director of Resources and Training Center Ms. Nadia Badran.

The training aimed to build the capacity of a group of the Libyan National AIDS Program focal points, prison authorities and representatives of NGOs who work on service provision of comprehensive harm reduction services related to People Who Use drugs.

The participants in the training discussed the epidemic in the region, the principles of harm reduction, safe injecting practices and needle prick injuries prevention both at community and prison settings, HIV and its modes of transmission, sign/symptoms, prevention and treatment of HIV, HBV and HCV both at the community and prison settings, and different harm reduction programs and interventions: OST, NSP, outreach.

At the end of the training suggestions were presented by the participants on how to benefit from the experience of the organizations in Lebanon and how to apply what is appropriate within the Libyan context in light of security and political conditions.
