Lecture on Harm Reduction Strategies in the MENA region by MENAHRA's Executive Director in Oxford
It is an exciting time to speak about drug policy and harm reduction. After long years of steadfast work against criminalising and punitive approach to drug using and drug addiction, the harm reduction movement is achieving global resonance and its goals are more than ever shared by a great many.
In this context, Elie Aaraj, executive director of MENAHRA, was invited to give a public lecture at the University of Oxford on invitation of PhD researcher Maziyar Ghiabi, who presented a paper at the closing session of the MENAHRA 2013 Conference.

Anne Rogers: My invitation to Beirut

My invitation to Beirut came about in a bizarre way. Earlier this year I was approached by Gary Reid who works with the World Health Organisation based in New Delhi about Ben’s documentary, ‘Ben : Diary of a Heroin Addict’. Gary had presented me with an award for the best film in the 21st International Harm Reduction Festival held in Liverpool in 2010. Gary wanted to know if I would give him permission to contact a friend of his who was working on a similar festival in the Lebanon later in the year suggesting that Ben’s documentary might be of interest. Of course, I readily gave my consent and was soon contacted by the conference people and a copy of the dvd was duly sent to be used at the 2nd Regional Middle East and North African Harm Reduction Conference in Beirut in November.
